Shiva Rudra - Tribute to the Red Eyed Lord

Lord Shiva Rudra along the Narmada

Rudra, the red eyed, gentle and fiery represents warmth and protection. Rudra, the red eyed shines through anything in the material world. Rudra the red eyed makes His presence felt no matter how uncanny the reality around. Rudra the red eyed, is there to be experienced if we try hard enough.

Fire is not as dangerous as it appears, Rudra is not as scary as he appears, Bhairava is not as violent as he is pictured. He is real, subtle and present in the pulse of life. What do I mean when I say this?

Rudra Shiva is not a treasure hunt or a well of information that once discovered is realized. No he is none of this. Rudra Shiva is the eye of life, the awakening being within myself, the consciousness, the fire of my soul, that has just started to burn. Rudra, the sound, brings vibration and heat of a higher kind, energy and life of a different nature, that needs to awaken, and mature with time. Rudra is vibration that if contemplated upon persistently reveals its nature slowly. Rudra, is the constant within us, the beat of the heart, the silenced thoughts that disappear to give way to pleasant imagination and high emotion when the Lord appears deep within the subconscious to be experienced. Rudra, is the light within, the sound energy within that silences all worry that clouds the imagination.

Rudra is that pulse within, you have it and I. We just need to try and He is there waiting to be awakened. Rudra is the blessing, he is the warmth and the fearlessness that makes us feel that this world, this maya is really quite trivial. Rudra is the subconscious that opens the inner world to us. Those ideas, those thoughts that I dont own, and those feelings that melt my heart pouring into tears that well out of my eyes, are these not an external expression of this awakening within myself?

My subconscious, the purity within me is where the Lord resides, as Bhikshatana, as Annapurni Mata, as Shankara, as Trayambaka, as Rudra. These are not just names attached with mythological stories, these are not just presentations of the Lord in human form, these are the very nature and energy of the supreme force Himself. And what if they appear within the vision of the subconscious to just bless the being, the human being, the limited human being that knows none, understands none, but fears all.

I am a speck in this ocean, I am a drop of life, and I am the 8th element, asleep lost and clouded in maya, I am part of Ashtamurti Shiva.

Om Bhavaya, Om Sarvaya, Om Isana, Om Tatpurusha, Om Rudra, Om Ughra, Om Bheema, Om Mahati, Om Paramaeshwar, the eight formed Lord, who represents the elements of water, fire, wind, ether, earth, sun, moon and my mind, O Sadayojata, O Sadashiva, the Lord of all the directions, the single pulse of energy that guides this world, O red eyed Rudra, I bow to you humbly for granting me this vision. The single energy center, the red eyed Lord, so clear and pure, so warm and enveloping, why then are you feared? Why then are you called terrific, why then are you considered so violent when all I can see is tenderness in your glowing eyes!

Om Rudraya devaya Namaha|

I bow to the Lord of the devas, to Rudra, to the creator of spiritual sound, that is involked in his names, the spiritual energy that vibrates within my being when I contemplate on his name. This devotion looks so small, so meak, so insignificant in front of your greatness, your form. To the fiery Lord of Love, warmth and peace, I bow humbly, and surrender to your presence deep within my subconscious, my real world, my core, that vibrates with the name of Rudra Trayambaka Shiva.

To see the sun, the moon and fire is one thing, but to feel the presence of the three eyed Lord Rudra is yet another. The core of red, the eye of light, the eye of life, the eye of fiery energy, the eye of divinity is in eternal abstraction, hard to explain but fulfilling and overwhelming to experience. Its the feeling of heightened emotion that results in heavy droplets of tears, that flow out like pearls falling through space, enhancing the bliss within so high that the minds knows nothing else. This awakens pulsating heat within the heart, heat that stays giving warmth of a flame that can beat the external cold without cover. This is ecstacy, this is emotion, this is beyond logic of the known kind, this is beyond blind faith, this is pure love, this is real.

Yes, Kavitha, you have now expressed in words the communication through 'abhaya mudra' of Nataraja Shiva...

Your comment comes as a surprise to me. I have been writing for a while, but there is something i seemed to have missed. I dont know if am reading into your comment too much... but is there something else you want to convey?

Hi Kavitha,
Sri Aurobindo speaks of the 'profound truths of Hinduism'.Each deity exists in both symbolic and real forms and represent different forces or aspects of the supreme power. They are not merely symbolic or figments of somebody's imagination.

Hi Kavitha, What 'I' meant was that your write up is very close to the 'truth' and due to 'inferiority complex' (on account of apparent heirarchy) one is unable to realise that one itself is one of the aspects of 'Shiva'. And that 'Shiva' conveys the unfathomable immortal formless supreme being, called 'anadi' (having no beginning) and 'anant' (having no end) who is basically a unique being existing in the infinite universe, who is believably reviewing His Own capability. And, hence the concept/ advice of seeking the 'inner self' instead of being oriented outwards and, therefore, making judgment based on a solitary phenomenon, or negligible knowledge attained over a short duration due to existence over a short and limited duration...just as 'we' get moved by different scenes, and differently though, when viewing projection on the silver screen - but reassessing as a whole at the end of the film...and concluding, "All's well that ends well."

This very thought is conveyed in the Hindu mythology of reaching the Absolute Truth only at the end of Satyuga from 'nought', and not at any intermediate stage of evolution . And it is because of this reason that one gets to see innumerable versions of the same 'truth' through different eyes...

Although RED is a symbol of danger (indicated through Kali's tongue by ancients as one of the aspects of 'destruction' only), fearlessness, is reflected by one of the four hands of Shiva the Nataraja...and it is the apsmara purush under His feet that conveys an average man, who is unable to realise that he/ she is one of the forms of Shiva Himself...

Hindu concept of existence of a unique Supreme Being, the Supreme Soul or Paramatma, who is seen in the form of the infinite universe, made up of innumerable galaxies, is perhaps difficult for an average human being in Kaliyuga, whose finite form believably, according to advanced Hindus is a result of use of the essence of the infinite universe in the form of the solar system...

One could perhaps visualise the phenomenon by giving different names to one's own images, about which one has knowledge, in a photo album at different ages and locations. One can thus, because of knowledge, can tell the difference in one's own capabilities in different fields of activity at different ages (related with different names one gives to those, treating them as different individuals) since the age of attaining consciousness, for all children up to a certain age appear helpless and at the mercy of their parents and close relatives...

The above therefore conveys how even the 'most intelligent person' today would be unable to know one's capabilities (or potential) up to a certain age in childhood, when generally all 'normal' children appear similar...believably closer to God!

In the month of March '08, 'I' revisited Nainital after having visited it first time in 1951. 'I' could not believe that during that visit, nearly six decades ago, 'I' had climbed Naina Peak (then called China Peak), located about 2,000 feet above the lake level, comfortably...whereas, during this visit, leave aside attempting it, 'I' wondered how 'I' could possibly do it then! It was tiring even to reach the guest house from the lake level, from where 'we' had a clear view of the Naina Peak and thus not getting out of memory, for it is said, "Out of sight, out of mind." Perhaps the case with existence of Satyuga is a reflection of the Absolute Truth, that is out of sight, or invisible, ever...

Sound, as well as silence, also is invisible, but ears, and brain as the nodal point, help one to recognise a particular sound heard with some particular element(s) of 'Nature' - only if and when one has got exposure to that at some point in the 'past'...One can't converse with another human being even if one is not conversant with the particular language, either one or both of them have been exposed to. Most of our problems emanate from lack of capacity to converse with each other humans, leave aside other animals, an innumerable variety of which apparently exist but are ignored as if those do not exist! Similarly, we ignore planet earth, as well as other heavenly bodies, despite knowing that Saturn, Sun etc. do virtually speak to us, and perhaps are able to understand each other! We, who have the know-how are able to almost instantaneously communicate with others - who are located at any corner of planet earth - by use of the internet, silently or through audio as well as video transmission...

It's thus a matter of knowledge, which exists in 'Nature' like an unfathomable sea, such that the more you know the more sober you become - like a deep sea...thus analogy helps in interpolation or extrapolation of various aspects in life...

We hav e seen earlier also how Narmada is associated with young Shiva, called Bhairavnath (earth when it still was a ball of fire, and hadn't cooled down and become as evolved as it appears 'today'...and known as Gangadhar and Chandrashekhar...

I apologise that this does'nt relate to this post but this seems to be a good forum where one can expect to get answers.I have always been intrigued by people's ability to foresee the future ie Nostradamus. How can someone see something which has'nt yet happened unless it all exists somewhere?Maybe like a movie which we can fast forward and see?I read a story from Ramayan which seems to be connected.Ram dropped his ring which fell into Patallok(underground or netherworld)Hanuman went there to retrieve it.The King of Patal welcomed him and on learning of Hanuman's mission, showed him a huge heap of rings. He said that they all belong to Ram and each time he takes avatar he drops a ring.He asked Hanuman to find the ring he wanted from the heap.
Does this mean that the events in this world keep repeating themselves in each cycle of creation and destruction?
They say that sometimes myths can provide glimpses of the Truth which is otherwise too difficult to comprehend.Could someone please try and give an interpretation of this?

Kavitha Kalyan said...

Well, judging by the fact that we all have a horoscope and that by itself already defines the life we are going to lead, whether we like it or not indicates in itself that the future has already been thought about.

The point here is we dont have any control of this, and all we can attempt to do with right guidance is minimize the impact of misery we face.

The question can be who decided our fate? I dont know, but the ancients in the previous yuga seemed to have got their act in order, left a lot of secrecy behind and gave us just the science of astrology to hope for any understanding of this.

Hence the various philosophies of do good and be good... which is fast dying out!

Kavitha

To my mind, the story from Ramayan seems to suggest that when people see future events, they might be actually seeing the past. What is going to be the future for us has already taken place in other cycles of creation. In each cycle, in Treta yug, Ram takes avatar and drops his ring.Maybe, in the same way, we all keep coming back, playing the same roles.Could it be because of this, that we all experience 'deja vu' at times when we feel that we have been in exactly the same situation before and know what is going to happen in the next moment?

Kavitha Kalyan said...

Hi

Deja vu occurs when we see future events in dreams or in the subconscious half sleep state but is unlikely to be a re-enacting of the past. Else we would take the same life and role which we do not.

One more thing is that our lives cannot be entirely compared with that of Lord Rama's or any avatar as they belonged to another yuga where the character and rules of living and existence were entirely different.

Remember, we dont have greater powers, we do not have highly polished telepathic instincts and we cannot fly or use weapons by pure mantra power. SO we are way below on that evolution chain.

Kavitha

This is the definition of 'deja vu'in Wikipedia -"Déjà vu (help·info) "already seen"; also called paramnesia, from Greek παρα "para," "near" + μνήμη "mnēmē," "memory") or promnesia, is the experience of feeling sure that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously (an individual feels as though an event has already happened or has happened in the near past). The term was coined by a French psychic researcher, Émile Boirac (1851–1917) in his book "L'Avenir des sciences psychiques" ("The Future of Psychic Sciences"), which expanded upon an essay he wrote while an undergraduate. The experience of déjà vu is usually accompanied by a compelling sense of familiarity, and also a sense of "eeriness," "strangeness," or "weirdness," The "previous" experience is most frequently attributed to real life, although in some cases there is a firm sense that the experience "genuinely happened" in the past.
The experience of déjà vu seems to be quite common among adults and children alike; in formal studies, 70% of people report having experienced it at least once. References to the experience of déjà vu are also found in literature of the past, indicating it is not a new phenomenon. It has been extremely difficult to evoke the déjà vu experience in laboratory settings, therefore making it a subject of few empirical studies."
Though researchers have been trying to explain it in various ways there is nothing conclusive as yet. Also, with due respect, I would like to say that as God is infinite ,his mysteries are also infinite and unfathomable."Hari anant,Hari katha ananta".A mortal can make tremendous spiritual progress, attain self realization, but even then there is so much more to know.I am reminded of the story of the six blind men and the elephant. As a seeker in a mortal frame,I can grope in the dark and seek glimmerings of light.I cannot state categorically what can be or cannot be posssible. That would be too presumptuous of me.

You know, there isnt too much of a secret to spiritualism! Its quite all around us! The secrecy is in us attempting to open up our own minds and as we progress in that the ease of realizing life and understanding spiritualism is so much higher that it comes as a pleasant surprise so much so that it appears like a secret unraveled.

Its in our interpretation. If you are looking for something spectacular, you will find it in such subtlety that you really wouldnt know whether to believe it or not! Its different. Its simply quite different.

Hi, The wise ancients realised existence of one and only supreme being who believably is reviewing His Own Past stories related with evolution, for purpose not made known to humans, who are in fact conveyed as His recording devices... The reflections of this are also believably seen in each individual's life which is like a flash only in the unending cycle...from Satyuga to Kaliyuga, that are repeated - like watching the same film again and again...

Hi. Just adding my 2cents worth here. No one "decides" anyone's fate. Just as a particular configuration of proteins in genes cause a particular genetic attribute, a particular astral configuration upon birth causes a particular pattern of life. Given the mindboggling permutations possible and the eons of human life that pass, its quite natural for similar personalities to emerge now and then. As for deja-vu and premonition, i'd read about something interesting termed "akashic records" by a Tibetan writer, Lobsang Rampa. These records are supposed to be imprints on the etheric matrix , of all phenomena that ever take place( sound, scene, smell, everything )which can be percieved by anyone due to sudden, random alignment of "feeder points" in that matrix with a reciever at a point of readiness ( also random)! This presupposes that time has no absolute tenses nor is linear, but is an undifferentiated continuum. Other interesting premises can be found in the writings of Edgar Cayce, F. Capra and Mani Bhowmick. What the truth is , we may never know, but it is sure interesting to cook up theories ! :-)

Kavitha Kalyan said...

I dont think these are theories as much as they are different versions of the same science. They might be perceived to be different because they explain with different terminology, but essentially the core of all these "theories" might just be a single truth.

Once you are able to believe in the concept of formless being to be related with zero time and space, the believable creation/ destruction shoould also be accepted to happen in zero time. That is, the 'present' ever remains zero. And, therefore the apparent rise and fall, construction and destruction, has to be a phenomenon akin to action replay of events that apparently happen in a fraction of a second, such as what we apparently get to see related to events that take place in practically no time or at a great speed...seen through innumerable eyes...but differently the various possible aspects of each event...

Hello Joshi uncle,
What you are saying makes sense but I am not really able to conceptualise it.I think some special ability is needed to understand such abstract concepts. But one thing that I have experienced is the slowing down of time during meditation.I would think only about half an hour has passed but the clock would tell me more than two hours have gone by.And no,I had'nt gone to sleep.I would be aware of all the sounds around me.Only the sense of smell would be vastly reduced.I later understood that that could be attributed to the slowing down or maybe nearly stopping of breathing.

Hi Ritwoja, Sorry! delay is due to inaccessibility of computer for some days where I was located for sometime, away from daughter's residence in Mumbai...

One caould perhaps take help of what 'you' believe to be 'real you' and 'your own image in a mirror' - either plain (which 'we' generally are accustomed to in our day-to-day life), or even 'magical mirrors' that reflect various images of the very same individual at the same instant, but appear different...and similarly read between lines the ancients' concept of one Supreme being as the 'real' unique one and all other physical forms as 'His Own Images'...

Joshi uncle, I remember reading about a temple constructed by a Tamil siddhar saint(sorry,I do not remember his name). The temple's garbhagriha had a mirror and a flame burning before it.The person who entered the garbhagriha would see his own image ,superimposed by the flame. The brahmins were outraged and destroyed the temple. But is'nt the concept a beautiful one?

Hi Rwitoja, The basic communication of realisation of the formless energy in all physical forms by 'Yogis' (yoga meaning addition of physical and spiritual), as expressed by, say 'pyramid' in Egypt, or 'light within' each human individual in 'ancient India' (name obviouisly derived from 'Indu', the Moon) was clearly understood by the 'wise' few for long [when seen with the background knowledge that although apparent time (and therefore related events) is moving backwards from Satyuga to Kaliyuga, the poorest era, it being the start of evolution - and yet possible to recall the better or the best past by those who are able to recall it by reaching near zero, if not the zero thought stage]...

For example, Gautam the Buddha is popularly called the 'Light of Asia'...

Krishna says all wrong acts result from lack of knowledge...and knowledge was yet to be attained in Kaliyuga the 'Dark Age', which isw believably being projected in our 'mind's eye' even during apparently the 'wakeful condition'...for God the unborn and unending is related with zero time...and He alone therefore is detached...
