Waking up to the sweet notes of the veena pouring into my ears is a very peaceful experience in a strange way, an experience so rare that its exotic. I was having a peaceful afternoon nap, escaping the burning afternoon sun outside, a fairly deep sleep which gave way to a silent consciousness that woke the mind, the senses, my being and gently brought me back to reality. And on the way I wonder, if I were to wake up to such sweet notes I really wouldn't have nothing to lose.
Sweet notes of tunes that ease the senses, that make all problems disappear and that which elevate the aesthetics of the notes in the mind. I envied emperor Akbar, for his life every day was a sweet journey laiden with notes that were strung together by Tansen. Classical notes with subtle nuanses that he didnt just appreciate but felt exaltation in the soul with it. Such peace that the mind rests even when awake. Akbar slept and woke up with the tunes played by Tansen, what a luxury, sweet notes that raise the senses, warm your blood, bring life to your muscles while you rise back to consciousness.
As I watched my cousin rhythmically pull at the strings to produce these tunes that flowed through the house she followed it with the physics of playing the instrument. This brought in the thought of Shiva Veenadhara, a form so graceful and gentle that it reveals in complete form the very exponent of performing arts. The great teacher, the Lord of all music, the notes just flow as he plays with his gentle fingers, the cosmic tunes of existance and life, that which reverberates in every being, universal music that appeals to all!
Shiva veenadhara, the river of music flows forth from Him, the river of consciousness, that could not just wake up the soul but cause it to rain, to shine at the mind's will. Such was the power of Tansen's music, that he brought the rain down to cool his heated body that didn't withstand the very notes he played. Such passion for music, is so hard to find now... its not about skill and performance, its about worship that it takes you to a different realm where every note, every sound is a new world of miracles revealed. Such was the music then.. purity in its fullest that it milked the very potency within it and let it flow to all those who seek its pleasure.
Music is about reviving the soul, merging into the supreme, its not just about tapping the hands and feet.

Yes, that’s right! However, to know the supreme soul, one would need to go deeper into the ‘Hindu Philosophy’…
In very brief, according to it, the physical universe is illusory, i.e., the physical forms are apparitions created by the Supreme energy and knowledge, a formless ‘Naadbindu’ or ‘the point source of energy’ that alone in reality exists, from out of which it apparently converted some sound energy to create the apparent dream-like physical matter that apparently fills the infinite balloon-like universal space. This is made possible through apparent physical senses in apparent animal life forms – sense organs, identified as eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and the sensitive skin, associated with the five senses of vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch through eight points, [like three octaves of notes of different frequencies are used in music, just as three aspects of creation, maintenance and transformation or destruction, are believably reflected through apparent physical forms of Brahma (Sun), Vishnu (Centre of our Galaxy) and Mahesh (or Shiva, i.e., our planet Earth)], instead of one in the formless dark space (Krishna/ Kali of mythology), all located within the animal form from tail-bone end to the head.
Man apparently is its superior-most creation that, with his sixth sense or extra sensory power (ESP), alone can at any given time reach the ‘Absolute Truth’ that man is the model of the universe, or reflection/ image of the Formless itself – only if he could tune himself to the requisite frequency, i.e., zero, as time and space for the Creator is zero, whereas the apparent physical forms are governed by ‘apparent time’ created with the apparent existence of the Solar system, which tend to move him away from the centre of the universe or the ‘Absolute Truth’, the origin as well as the goal. The Hindu Philosophy (vide Gita) states that the only purpose of man is to seek the formless Creator as well as the Gods with forms. They indicated Lord Shiva, i.e., our earth to be the physical model of the formless Vishnu by stating, “Vishnu is Shiva and Shiva is Vishnu,” and also “Satyam Shivam Sunderam,” i.e., Shiva alone is the ‘Truth’ and Shiva alone is beautiful (in appearance in physical form, a statement which is truly reflected by our apparently 4.6 billion-year-old Earth, that conforms to the belief of the Creator to be ‘unborn’ and ‘unending’).
The nusical instrument, Veena, was associated with Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning. And music or sound energy being the form of energy used in creation, it believably acts as a medium to reach the zero state or the Supreme - by providing connection of the individual soul that resides within each human form as a part of the Supreme itself, with the Supreme.
True, music is much more than what the body responds to.
They are echos that match the similar vibrations of the different states of the inner self.

This could perhaps be explained by the fact that the formless Creator, ‘Bhootnath’, with its believably ‘innumerable eyes in all directions’ is viewing the ‘past’ 1000 times during one day in His unending life (1080 times believed by me), as conveyed through apparent time and related events being depicted as moving from Satyuga, the age when perfection in ‘material field’ was also achieved by the formless Creator, back to Kaliyuga, the age at the beginning of which it was in a purely ‘spiritual’ form only, i.e., the believable point source of infinite energy or Naadbindu, alone. Thus the behaviour or the efficiency of material aspect in human life is apparently undergoing deterioration.
Ancient ‘Hindus’ would also have observed hierarchy in all aspects of ‘Nature’ in the ‘Past’, just as we too apparently continue to do so in the ‘Present’. The mythological stories indicate ‘Lord Vishnu’, the formless Creator, lying on a bed formed by the serpent Ananta(nag)/ Sheshanag in the middle of ‘Kshirsagara’ or the ‘milky ocean’, and keeping an eye on His creation in a super conscious state or ‘Yoganidra’, i.e., apparently asleep while remaining conscious. Thus the story conveys the formless Creator viewing the variety in ‘Nature’ at all times created due to apparent hierarchy irrespective of which character, an image of its own, at any given time occupied the lowest, or any intermediate, or the highest position. The phenomenon also gets reflected in a man-made museum where specimens pertaining to different time periods are chronologically placed within it to mark time, from the oldest available date in the ‘past’, right up to the latest ‘present’. A specimen that gets damaged or has outlived its useful life would obviously get replaced, by the Curator, by another pertaining to that particular period, for the sake of continuity. Thus the stories, viz., Shiva Puraan, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and so on have laid emphasis on the 'hero' or 'Purushottam' the best among men (or women) at any given time – with Shiva or our earth as the best of all times for the sake of comparison. Thus music, according to the 'inclination' of the individual's liking, at any time can help one to get connected with the Creator. In fact, the ancients believed that one could obtain 'moksha' or liberation from the cycle of birth and death by performing actions devotedly, surrendering in any Deity, Although the Creator believably is formless and therefore difficult to visualize and therefore it was found simpler to accept a deity with form. Shiva believably being the perfect image of the formless is considered as 'Bholanath' or the 'Simple God'.

Yes in a form unknown to us.
How do we prove it?
by trying to unlearn our past lives, and evolving such that we allow new knowledge to step in and not question it yet because we still dont know enough to start asking. So proving is not so simple, besides we are very incapable of accepting proof for it will come in a form which will pose more doubt and fear than happiness until we are really ready to take in any experience.
Question is are we really all that ready?
the answer might not be so simple.

There are stories about exclamations, viz., “Aham Brahmasmi!” / “Shivoham!” / “I am (the son of) God!” All such, by some ‘wise’ ancients as results of realization, explain the need to realize the ‘self’ or ‘Atman’ by every ‘seeker of Truth’ at any given time. Any numbers of words fail to express a realization, just as expressed in the saying, ‘Taste of the pudding lies in eating’. It was therefore said, “If you have faith, it (Shivlinga/ Sahalagram/ Idol…) is God, otherwise it is (merely) a stone!”
Let us take a look at our planet earth for instance. It apparently is made only from ‘grains of sand and drops of water’, and it continues to exist in the shape of an apple because of its gravitational force and it’s interaction with forces exerted by other Heavenly Bodies and those generated by other agencies in ‘Nature’ from time to time. Soil, air, and water also independently absorb/ radiate relatively weaker energy. Everyone knows how earth sustains innumerable life forms on it and yet it is considered ‘non living’!
Thus, we learn that the apparent physical forms are in existence, or die, because of or as a result of interaction of various forms of energy… However, souls are believed to be forms that, being made of energy, cannot be destroyed and can acquire different temporary forms for a limited duration. It sounds like one noticing that a single source of energy, by rotation, can operate either a source of light/ a radio/ a watch/ a torch light/ a TV/ a digital computer, and so on, perhaps as a hint in ‘Nature’ about the modus operandi of the formless creator…
Certain Yogis/ Lamas, etc., in the past during their life-time, are believed to have achieved powers to enter different ‘dead’ animal forms to revive them to gain knowledge in that form, just as perhaps each human being is believed to have evolved over long duration, measured in terms of Yugas, and therefore unaware of it due to soul’s inherent characteristics. Even in the ‘present’ also some rare Yogis are seen performing ‘miracles’ in isolated locations… Otherwise, there is no ‘scientific’ reason to explain how one such person meeting for the first time told me in advance about one of my relatives suffering from high blood pressure! Although I didn’t take it seriously at that moment, it was confirmed by the fact that my father had a heart attack within a fortnight even when he, located thousands of kilometers away, himself wasn’t aware of the impending danger!
One needs to satisfy oneself of the ‘Truth’ from one’s own or even others’ experience, and overall knowledge thus gained even while remaining involved in any one field or different fields of activity during one life time.
I can only comment that our ancestors must not have been fools to have spent years devoting so much time in the praise of GOD through whatever field of activity, in ‘fine arts’, they were engaged in! Believing in the mischievous nature of one who is unborn, i.e., theoretically younger than a newly born child even and attempting to see through its eyes, Zero (0) or a full circle as in letter ‘O’, the perfect ‘unending’ figure/ being (represented through Shivalinga, i.e., a circle as seen in its plan, and reaching the ‘sky’ or infinity as a symbol of unending power for sustenance of physical life), is sandwiched between incomplete or ‘imperfect’ circles represented by letters ‘G’ and ‘D’, perhaps the ‘Generator’ and the ‘Destroyer’ respectively…
It could remind one of the ‘middle-path’ advocated by the Buddha…
As per practice developed by the ‘wise’ ancients, Astrologers relate any individual with some planet, or a particular member of our Solar system, from the particulars of his birth – time, place etc. And then proceed to predict his likely behaviour and also suggest some corrections through ‘Tantra’, i.e., direct use of ‘inferior’ souls; or ‘Mantra’, i.e., use of chanting of hymns to provide some beneficial effect on the listener; or ‘Yantra’, i.e., use of particular colour/ metal on the body, through clothes/ gemstone/ numerical charts, etc. Similarly, one would observe that, like in the use of mantras, a singer starts her singing based on a particular note or frequency that generally lies in the middle octave, and then presents the rendition of a particular ‘Raga’, based around that note, using only the notes that are allowed during ascent to/ descent from other notes in either of the three octaves, as prescribed by the ‘experts’ who developed that particular ‘raga’ in the past. Of course, even here, as Kavitha says, knowledge is lacking today and any ‘fine art’ is generally used purely for commercial purpose due to the effect of ‘Time’ in terms of Yuga and its stage, which, as the rapid fall in ‘moral values’ indicate, is perhaps rapidly moving closer to the end of Kaliyuga, the age of poorest human efficiency!

As I said, one can gain from the experience of others also. It was a physician, a relative, who pointed out to me that x-rays of the back of human body reveals the structure of the pelvic bone to resemble the base of the musical instrument, Veena, while the backbone or the spinal column resembles the higher vertical part of the instrument with the vertebrae appearing like the keys that are used for tuning different lengths of the metal strings to requisite frequencies. I could relate the strings with the network of nerves and also the provision of another human head-like hollow gourd near the top to act as another support to keep the instrument horizontally (like reclining Lord Vishnu) at one level on the stage while the Veena player plucks at the strings to produce the desired notes used in a particular ‘raga’ or composition… Variations in structure and holding of the instrument in some other positions can also be noted in other stringed instruments, viz., Sitar, Sarod, Sarangi, Israj, Violin, Viola, and so on...
Now, the question that arises is: If the ancients were ignorant of ‘science’ in the past, how did Veena, associated with Shiva/ Saraswati believably belonging to the Satyuga, come to acquire an image of the human body structure?
Similarly, the belief of Yogis about eight ‘bandhas’ or locks - located along the spinal chord at different levels from tail-bone end to the head and each of those housing the essence of one of the members of the solar system - inside human body could help understand the meaning of ‘Krishna’s flute’... Every Hindu knows that Krishna was born on the eighth day of a particular month and perhaps also that the numeral ‘8’ is used in horizontal position by ‘scientists’ to represent infinity. And, that man recoups energy lost in performance of actions, physical or mental, when he sleeps while breathing in regularly, an involuntary action throughout his life - generally through his nose, or even through his mouth!
One would notice that a flute player blows air through his mouth at a level lower than the closed top of a hollow pipe that has holes on the body at different locations while the bottom end is open. And, that the instrument is virtually horizontal when it is being played. The desired note is created by manipulation of fingers over the holes that opens the right one while closing others as demanded by the requisite note to be played! Maybe, one could relate the phenomenon with the movement of energy in teh spinal chord and the concept of activation of 'Kundalini'...
The atmosphere seems to have become too serious, therefore, in a lighter vein I recall a joke, with the background that the eccentric ‘I’ loves any form of music - even the sound made by the tube light/ fan/ crickets etc., which forms my base note to hum to myself for my own pleasure!
Although I haven’t had any formal training in Hindustani Classical (even light classical) music, which I prefer, instrumental or vocal by recognized singers, viz., Pandits Ravi Shankar and Bhimsen Joshi, Mangeshkar sisters, and so on, an unending list, and have literally fiddled with violin in the childhood that was in my father’s possession…
As a young boy, I was impressed by Pandit Onkar Nath Thakur’s lecture after he was criticized for spoiling Hindustani style of singing by mixing ‘gamaka ang’ (contralto?) of the Karnatik style when he once sang Mira’s bhajan, or devotional song, in raga Bhairavi (a morning raga) on the All India Radio’s National Programme…the essence of which was that even when one speaks it’s music, for it is presentation of one’s heart’s feelings to God within the other (this is extension of what I learnt from Pearl S. Buck’s story that a ‘Hindu’ when he says ‘Namaste’ with folded hands to another, he is in fact praying to the God within!)…
A violinist had placed one of his fingers on one of the four strings at one fixed place and continued to play the same note again and again - to the annoyance of his friend.
The friend asked him why he didn’t play some composition like all others did.
He replied that for time immemorial all musicians have been attempting to reach the note that reflected the formless Creator. I have eventually found it and now I play this one only as it gives me a feeling of ‘eternal bliss’!
An excellent narrative Joshi uncle. its like the universe, what we see are stars above and very magnified atom of sorts. well if we have to dive deep into the making of a stomata cell structure of a leaf we would get to see the same thing. a complete circle with teh same visual at both ends, one big one miniscule.
the same with music, what appears to be the basic note is also the most profound. for you go the complete circle to arrive at the basic note, which is the most profound also when you view it from super conciousness.
maturity and realization just goes to say that this is all an illusion that makes a complete circle and shows you a lot of things on its way that seem to appear different and disconnected though all of it seems to start and stop within one complete whole or universe or maya.
we have to live within it, in the bodies we currently occupy and view the supreme picture through our narrow vision. its these small bits in profound music and thought that bring back to us a speck of what is beyond the universe as we see it.
this is one huge drama, and the simple but profound notes of an instrument just twang that single truth into our ears. its for us to interpret it... and largely we tend to fail.
"aham brahmaasmane" simple but profound. the most profound things are often also the simplest. its the human mind that tends to complicate it and make it look larger than life.
the note he played was simple and completely profound, unadultrated and potent... not many would understand it, they were simply incapable.. such is life... what do we do :) ?
Kavitha, apparently there is so much to know that one doesn't know what all data/ info to retain as one moves forward in time. For example, I had read in one of the Upnishads long ago that if one closes the right ear with a hand, in a quiet place, then one would hear a sound within the ear. It said that higher the pitch of the sound the higher is the level of the soul within. I could hear it. But, when I asked some others also, I didn’t get confirmation from them. So, I wasn’t sure and wasn’t able to tell that confidently. In fact, I sometimes find some note, being played on the TV/ radio resound in my ear, like resonance of similar frequencies. However, with the background knowledge of ‘Naadbindu’, ‘OM’ as the universal sound, and man as a model/ image of the universe via the most evolved Heavenly Bodies, i.e., the Solar system, I wasn’t surprised when I read that Voyager 2 recorded a sound emanating from the planet Saturn - that resembled a mix of chirping of birds, tinkle of bells, playing of drums!
I wonder if the same sounds also resound within us humans too...and result in human thoughts...

could i then compare the human mind to a sea shell that has been worshipped and used for worship over the years.
when you hold that sea shell next to the ear you get a resonating sound that is identified in the likes of "OM" and not necessarily that of the sea.
Maybe as one evolves, the energy within the self, is reflected out as the same sound which can be heard inside should we close an ear.
Possible? i think possible.
and maybe its the same sound that when decipated through other channels and not stored within securely results in thought, excessive thought. thats when we say there is so much noise in the mind.

With the background that records of music are made on discs of earthly or clayey material, at one time an idea was reported in newspapers, that pots made on potter’s wheel used during Cleopatra’s time, in some Egyptian market area, might have recorded on those the subjects of common discussions prevalent in one of the advanced civilizations. Although, the sound would have become much feeble with the passage of time, yet with advancement in technology man might be able to hear those some day to know more about the brilliant past…
Apparently lot of data is recorded in innumerable ways in ‘Nature’, which is apparently becoming known gradually in the present also. For example, it is well known that the age in years of a tree is known from the number of its annular rings. In fact, in Ramayana, Tulsidas depicts Rama asking trees and other 'plant lives' if they had seen Sita being taken that way by Ravana! Certain Yogis/ Lamas are believed to have understood the languages of birds and learnt many things that were not known to common man during that period. Even in the present we have learnt that bees communicate through sign language (like primitive man) the particulars of location of flowers to other bees, and so on…
It is believed today that nature of man is reflected from his diet, and in the past also ‘sattvic’ diet was recommended – as in the advice, ‘Simple living and high thinking’. Preference for vegetarian diet perhaps indicates advice to consume energy stored within the relatively older life forms, as time reportedly, according to ancient ‘Hindus’, is moving from the best period to the worst! And, man is perhaps therefore inspired to maintain Historical and Archaeological records to visualize what all good things he has lost/ is losing with time and thereby attempt to know the peak of human achievement, the infinite (that which the ‘scientists’ also apparently seek) or the ‘Truths’ of the illusion apparently reached by the ‘wise’ from time to time, as perhaps in the ‘Vedic Era’ too!
It is perhaps like viewing the same interesting film again and again! In the present, in the North, viewing 'Sholay' many times, again and again, (and similar many other popular films in other regions) perhaps reflects the formless reviewing its 'perfect' achievement as compared to the possible range of the worst to the best - zero to infinity!

It shows that they themselves had become parts of Earth or Shiva - and hence the exclamation, “Shivoham!” That is, “I am Shiva (the immortal Formless as reflected by its perfect model/ image, i.e., the physical Earth)!” Therefore, for the others, the majority, it is only a question of belief or faith in the essential logic contained in the ‘Hindu’ mythological stories…
Kavitha, in so far as ‘I’ am personally concerned as a believable ‘instrument’, I feel the turning point in my ‘thought plane’ or exposure to ‘spiritual world’, as different from the believably illusory ‘material world’ or the ‘Maya’ of the Formless, apparently happened on account of many ‘mysterious’ incidents in the Northeast, the direction that I have shown elsewhere to be under the control of the planet Mars, which the mythological stories relate with Ganesha/ Hanuman and essence of which is indicated in human body to be housed at the ‘Mooladhar Bandha or Lock’ as the “trouble shooter’, i.e., ‘Vighnaharta’ or ‘Sankat Mochan’. The belief was further strengthened after I got to read Bhagavad Gita - that was gifted to me by a lady staff member earlier – only after I returned to Delhi (or ‘Indraprastha’ the Capital city of the ‘Kuruvanshi’ kings in Dwaperyuga when Krishna apparently played the role of an Ambassador on behalf of the Pandavas) in the early Eighties...and since then I ‘surrenderd in Him’, for I found that anyway one is surrendering to some other agency or his own desires during the whole life…

However, just want to mention that my music teacher once told me - playing/practising/singing music is sadhna, its effects may not be outwardly visible but you are evolving even as you practice, and carry over this life's sadhna into the the next.

'Sadhna' means ‘to control’. Maybe the word could bring to mind the image of the horses 'expert' Western cowboys catch in the wild and then train for traveling over large areas to control the herd of cattle under their charge – apparently a tough job…
One could similarly call it a ‘coincidence’ or a ‘design’ that 'Krishna', the reincarnation of 'Vishnu' the formless, in ‘Hindu’ mythological stories also was a cowboy, but with a difference. For, the interesting stories are related with training of minds of each and every member of the animal world for Yugas by another raw soul who achieved perfection, with the help of the ‘beej mantra’, ‘OM’, or sound energy, contimuously tuning the instrument, flute in the particular reference as I have indicted earlier, within each - to create harmony when Satyuga was reached, i.e., when all souls were 'enlightened'…
However, as time is moving backwards, one finds, naturally that compared to the 'present', relatively there was harmony till the recent ‘past’ - that actually was ‘future’ as compared to the ‘present’, which in reality is the ‘past’ when ‘all horses’ or souls were absolutely wild, i.e., when each flute was new and needed to be tuned properly!
Yoga means an exercise in three fields; physical, mental, and spiritual, around which a physical form believably evolved. And, just as one takes proper care of the external body, similarly, man the superior-most form is supposed to keep his ‘flute’ or the ‘asht chakras’ also properly maintained to keep the flute perfectly tuned to experience 'Truth' of Satyuga at any other time also!
